Let the Challenge Begin

so at work on Friday, two guys decided to undergo a challenge of gastro-intestinal proportions. The task? eat 20 dollars worth of food from the super cheap japanese restaurant Tokyo 7-7. The result? a near coma-like state of drowsiness commonly known as "the itis".

neither contestant completed the challenge, the only true winners were the audience, who got to witness this test of consumption-based fortitude.

A New Harvest: Rant of the High Geek Priest

Sorry about the massive update, the time usually spent neglecting this blog is being rerouted for your convenience, dear reader. Anyway, I wanted to talk about a discovery I made yesterday. While at the book store attempting to reserve a copy of Harry Potter (they were out), I came across a rack of comic books. Looking to cement my nerdiness (and also find some good reference material). I made a guilty discovery, a comic produced by marvel called "power pack", which features four pre-teen sibling superheroes teaming up with various marvel heroes to defeat bullies and villains alike. Lame plot I know, but the thing that really interested me was that the art was done by a team of japanese artists collectively called "Gurihiru". I found it awesome that their style was basically a reverse-engineered version of Avatar (an american made "anime"). It's definitely marvel, but it's also very anime. I'm big into hybrid comics like this, and the colors just leap out at you. There's a girl who flies around leaving a rainbow trail everywhere, yeah...it's like that.

anyway, I just thought it was cool, I've never really bought comics from "the rack" before, but the simple fun that is power pack has inspired a change in my settled, creaking ways.

After the exhibit, we went and saw Ratatouille. It's definitely the best movie I've seen in a while (transformers is an oh so close second though). You just gotta love that new school Disney/Pixar Magic. I think crazy ol' Walt would be proud to see how things are going over there. I just can't remember feeling so satisfied after the movie was over since I saw Knocked Up. But this hit me on a completely different level. If you haven't seen it yet, please fix this problem, and fast.

So today I got cornered by an adolescent boy today after leaving the Trader Joe's next to Sony. He had the beginnings of a mustache and soft peach hair on his arms. He wanted to tell me about the ACLU. While he was explaining their cause, I abrubtly realize that this was not a boy at all, but merely an unshaved women of about my age! A shocking discovery! Still, to be fair I heard her out and tossed her a couple of dollars for the information and her cause. It should be known, however, that for the entire second half of the conversation I could not help but stare at her fem-stache.

So I'm really liking what I'm seeing at Sony Animation. I'm starting to realize that if I'm going to be in animation, storyboarding is what I want to do. As I said before, it's like pulling the sword out of the stone, the stone being the script and the sword being the movie...damn that's deep.

New things of note.

A couple days ago I saw a 12 year old kid dressed as a ninja running around in westwood village. Needless to say, the sight filled me with joy. Finally, children are respecting the ways of their elders. society is saved.

I spent a good part of today drawing a big black naked guy and no, I wasn't filming a gay porn remake of Titanic, just doing some figure drawing. It was the first time I've done it, and it's a really great exercise.

I spent 40 minutes looking for a place to park this afternoon. People driving past me could witness the fantastic sight that was me cursing loudly at some unknown foe. Let the mask be cast off, that foe's name is Sidestreet, and it pours it's entire being into thwarting me day in and day out.

the majority of deaths in children under 4 involve incidents in which they attempt to emulate child adventurer Dora the explorer. Most of these cases end with the child either found dead, having gone "exploring" in the wrong part of town. Some get lucky, however, and find their way to mexico, where their newly acquired spanish skills help them to lead a prosperous life selling chiclets outside the american embassy.

new sketches

new sketches I did today at the Getty Museum. I saw some really awesome paintings by really famous dead europeans. They had a gallery set up for a guy named Oudry who painted animals for some king and I learned that in the 18th century Europe was totally obsessed with rhinoceroses. Oudry did a ten foot painting of one and several other artists were inspired to draw this "Wond'rous Horn'd Beaste". They were like the beatles of the 1700's. Since nobody had ever seen one 'then, everyone started flipping out and buying as much rhino merch as they could. There was a whole part of the gallery dedicated to sketches, engravings and even lockets featuring rhinoceroses.

I'm sure there were dissenters though. People who thought that rhinos were just a fad, and that the animal kingdom had "sold out". These people stuck to the classics and mostly collected pictures of lions and more "dignified" mammals.

I also suggest that if you haven't seen a movie called "Paprika" yet that you remedy this condition almost immediately.

I've got so many sketches that I want to upload, but I really don't want to unpack my scanner yet. I've been playing musical futons here at the fraternity house since sunday night, but tomorrow I should be settled into my actual room. At that point I'll do the following.

1. hook up my scanner.

2. upload sketches

3. start back on other projects

4. lock the door and do a silent run-through of Shakespeare's Hamlet
entirely with sock puppets.

5. more sketches

6. alphabetize my keyboard

7. Inform people (via blog) that I was only kidding about 1-3.

I need to stop typing in lists.

In other news, I'm trying really hard to mix up my style, an innovation which should come in handy for use in my many other projects.

But with any luck, I'll learn some new techniques and have much to show for my efforts.

Things I've Learned

Here a few helpful tips to make your stay in LA more pleasant.

1. Everyone is crazy, you are probably crazy too, but have yet to realize it.

2. Unless you are really, really angry all the time, you're most likely going to get in a crash while driving here.

3. Surf's Up is a really good movie, not only because of the fact that I'm working for Sony, but because of how well the dialogue flows and the beautiful effects of the surfboards cutting through the water.

4. Always carry change with you. It's useful for several purposes including doing your laundry, paying parking meters, and of course fending off homeless people.

5. Linux is a strange and foreign thing, revered by most sages as "the one true nerdspeak," impenetrable by those not well practiced in the coding arts.

6. LA is aweseome.

So yesterday was yet another exciting chapter in the Golden State Chronicles. My dad and I discovered a restaurant called "Rutts". Imagine if Waffle House added a stir fry section to their menu, and also didn't have that one creepy guy sitting in the corner muttering to himself. That's kind of what Rutts was like, a true diamond in the rough. After this feast, we set about finding a rental car. Apparently everyone in California drives, but strangely enough, nobody ever moves anywhere. I think the majority of the people who live in this state get paid to just drive back and forth on the freeway all day. After an excruciating hour on the I-405, we finally made our way to the Dodgers stadium...only to find they were out of tickets. We decided it'd be just downright rude not to at least pay for parking, so we went in, and luckily found a shifty gentleman willing to give us to tickets to the spectacle known as "The Freeway Series", an event which I'm told only occurs once every millenia, when the moon glows blood red and the narwhal's tusk is at it's greatest height. It also occasionally happens whenever the Dodgers play the Angels.
The Dodgers were defeated 3 to 0, but nobody really cares. I've decided that people go to baseball games for the soul purpose of buying overpriced beer and
yelling at people they've never seen before. After the game, I practiced driving to and from work, a necessary procedure for someone like me. I'm not medically certified, but I'm pretty certain that I'm missing the part of my brain that helps me navigate. We'd been driving through LA for two days, and I still had no idea where to go, truly a shame.

Hopefully your appetite for words has been moistened, and hopefully I will soon have more tales to great your weary eyes with. I'm still getting the hang of recording myself like this, and I might start just putting sketches with captions here instead, it's really anyone's guess at this point.

I am in the state

Hey faithful,

I'm in L.A. right now, and I must say, it's rather nice. It's nice to be with my dad, he has so far been generous enough to pick up the tab at all the fancy restaurants we've been to. We at lunch at a place called "Ford's filling station" today, and discovered that next door there was a gallery which specializes in animation and illustration. There was several original pieces from Dr. Seuss, as well as animation cells from The Simpsons and some Disney Movies. All in all, it was a pretty incredible gallery. We also went by Culver city today and got some more info from Sony. I can't freakin' wait to start working for them, Sony Animation seems really cool, and everyone there seems very nice and excited about what they do. We also found a nice rental car place, so transportation shouldn't be a problem. That's pretty much all that's happened so far, I really want to accompany these posts with sketches, and once I get my scanner hooked up I'll start doing that. For now, however, I leave you with little but a promise.
